Luxury jewelry retailer Tiffany & Co. said Friday that its fiscal second-quarter net profit rose a better-than-expected 19%, driven by demand from tourists and in markets such as Europe and China.

Still, sales fell short of the company's internal projection and Wall Street expectations after more aspirational shoppers - middle-class consumers with luxury tastes - were concerned about the economy and hurt U.S. sales for products below $500, while luxury demand, such as statement jewelry above $50,000 continued to see modest growth, spokesman Mark Aaron said on a conference call.
